“Explain what?” Maren asked, her voice shaking. “That your wife knew about our children before you did?”

“She didn’t tell me, Maren,” I said. “I only just found out.”

“Oh, please,” Celeste interrupted, taking a sip of her wine. “Let’s not play the victim, Adrian.”

“You knew what your mother was,” Celeste said, her voice cold.

“I had no idea she paid Dr. Mercer,” I said, glaring at her.

“But you suspected something was wrong,” Celeste said. “You just didn’t want to look too closely because it might disrupt your comfortable life.”

“That is not true,” I said.

“Isn’t it?” Celeste asked.

She picked up the blue folder from the table.

“This contains the original laboratory results from nine years ago,” she said.

“Along with the signed agreement between your mother and Dr. Mercer,” she added.

“Give it to me,” I said, reaching out.

Celeste stepped back, holding the folder close to her chest.

“Not so fast,” she said.

“What do you want, Celeste?” I asked.

“I want what was promised to me,” she said.

“The trust shares,” I said.
