Miller let out a short, dry breath that wasn’t quite a laugh.
“Your men are currently choosing sides, Adrian,” Miller said.
“Half of them are already taking orders from Leo.”
I looked at the monitor, watching the steady, fragile wave of my baby’s heartbeat.
“We aren’t safe here,” I said, looking at the door.
“You are as safe as my federal badge can make you,” Miller said.
But there was a hesitation in his voice that made my chest tighten.
Adrian noticed it too.
He took a step closer to Miller, the metal chain between his wrists hanging heavy.
“You don’t trust your own people, do you?” Adrian asked quietly.
Miller did not answer immediately.
He reached up and adjusted his tie, his fingers slightly stiff.
“This office has been compromised for months,” Miller admitted, his voice dropping to a murmur.
“Leo Vance has deep pockets,” Adrian said. “He knows which transport agents are on the take.”
“I’m handling it,” Miller said, though his expression remained tense.
