The baby moved, a small, sudden flutter against my palm.

I closed my eyes, listening to the man I had spent years trying to run away from.

He had just destroyed his own empire to buy our freedom.

“I still have your wife,” Leo snarled through the receiver.

“My men are at the motel.”

“They’re waiting for my call.”

“They’ve been gone for twenty minutes, Leo,” Adrian said.

A heavy silence fell over the wire.

“What?” Leo asked, his voice suddenly small.

“I called the local police department from a burner phone before I met you,” Adrian said.

“I gave them the room number.”

“I told them there were armed men planning a kidnapping.”

“Your associates are currently sitting in a holding cell in Cook County.”

Leo let out a low, guttural sound, like an animal backed into a corner.

In the front seat, Miller grabbed his radio receiver.

“All units, move in,” Miller said.

“Suspect is armed and highly volatile.”

“Take him down.”

“The money is secure.”

The engine of our sedan roared to life as Miller slammed his foot on the gas.
