The Bitter Cost of Securing Safety for the Family I Broke
I gripped the back of Miller’s seat so hard my fingernails dug into the fabric.
Miller sat perfectly still, his hand hovering over his radio.
“You think you can run this city, Leo?” Adrian asked, his voice steady. “You don’t have the connections.”
“I have the offshore accounts,” Leo said. “Or I will, once you hand over that drive.”
“The accounts require dual authentication,” Adrian said. “You know that.”
“I have your codes,” Leo said. “I had your accountant copy them before he had his little accident.”
A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck.
Leo had planned this for months, right under Adrian’s nose.
“You killed Marcus,” Adrian said.
“He was old,” Leo said. “He was loyal to your father, not to the future. Now give me the drive.”
“And if I don’t?” Adrian asked.
“Then I call the boys down at the motel,” Leo said. “The ones waiting for your wife.”
I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth.
Miller glanced back at me, his face pale in the green glow of the dashboard.
