“And the confession?” Miller asked, looking at Adrian.

“I’ll write it,” Adrian said. “But first, we arrange the meet with Leo.”

Miller leaned back, his eyes narrowing. “You want to bait him?”

“He’s paranoid,” Adrian said. “He won’t show up for a federal sting. But he’ll show up to take the ledgers from me.”

Adrian opened his phone again and scrolled through his contacts.

He stopped on Leo’s name.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with a quiet sadness.

“Once I make this call, there’s no going back,” he said.

I reached across the table and touched his arm.

“Do it,” I whispered.

Adrian tapped the screen and put the phone on speaker.

The ringing sound seemed to echo in the quiet diner.

After three rings, the line clicked.

“Adrian,” Leo’s voice came through, smooth and menacing. “I was wondering when you’d call.”

Adrian kept his voice steady.

“I’m tired of running, Leo,” Adrian said.

“We all get tired, boss,” Leo replied. “Where are you?”

“I’m still in the city,” Adrian lied. “But I’m done. I want to take Claire and leave.”
