The man collapsed sideways, his body rolling into the deep snow.

I dropped the gun, my hands trembling violently.

Adrian scrambled to his feet, coughing and rubbing his neck.

He looked at the man, then at me.

He didn’t say a word.

He just picked up his gun, took my hand, and pulled me toward the highway.

We reached the steel guardrail just as a pair of headlights appeared in the distance.

The vehicle was moving slowly, its spotlight sweeping the snowdrifts.

It was a local police cruiser.

“Is it help?” I whispered.

“No,” Adrian said, pulling me down behind the metal barrier. “Leo’s people have the local sheriff on retainer.”

The spotlight bounced closer, illuminating the white field just feet from where we lay.

Adrian pulled his phone out again.

He tapped the screen and held it to his ear.

“Miller,” he said when the call connected. “It’s DeLuca.”

“I’m listening,” Agent Miller’s voice came through the receiver, clear and cold.

“I want a deal,” Adrian said. “Absolute immunity for my wife. Witness protection. A new life.”

“And what do I get?” Miller asked.
