“Get an ambulance,” Adrian ordered, his voice shifting back to the cold authority of the boss I feared.

“The paramedics are already on their way,” the lead agent said.

He pulled a pair of heavy silver handcuffs from his belt.

“I am Agent Miller, FBI. You are under arrest, Mr. DeLuca.”

“For what?” Adrian demanded, shifting his weight to shield my body with his own.

“We have a federal warrant,” Miller said.

The terminal seemed to grow completely quiet, the flight announcements fading into background noise.

Two other agents stepped forward, grabbing Adrian’s arms to pull him away from me.

“My wife needs a hospital,” Adrian growled, struggling against their grip.

Miller looked down at me, his face pale and serious under the fluorescent lights.

“She is going to one,” Miller said.

Then he leaned closer to Adrian, his voice dropping so low I could barely hear it over the storm outside.

“And you need to come with us if you want that child to survive the night.”

Adrian went completely still.

“What are you talking about?” Adrian asked.

“Your empire is compromised, DeLuca,” Miller said.

“We aren’t here for your ledger or your warehouses.”

Miller clicked the cuffs around Adrian’s wrists with a sharp, metallic sound.

“The threat isn’t to your business,” Miller whispered.

He looked directly at my stomach.

“The contract out there isn’t on you. It’s on your unborn baby.”

I stared at the agent, the pain in my abdomen momentarily forgotten in my shock.

“My baby?” I breathed, my voice cracking.

Miller did not answer me.

He signaled to two paramedics who were now pushing a gurney through the security gate.

As they lifted me onto the cold canvas sheet, Adrian’s eyes locked onto mine.

He looked truly terrified for the first time in his life.

“Leo,” Adrian muttered to himself, his jaw tightening.

“Leo was supposed to secure the perimeter.”
