He wiped a hand over his face.

“Julian was willing to do whatever Sterling wanted in exchange for the identity,” my father continued. “Sterling orchestrated the swap. He forced me to stay silent, to tell you that you were crazy, to keep you away from the clinic.”

I stared at him, disgusted and horrified.

“You sold out my husband to save yourself,” I said.

“I did it to save you, too!” he cried out, standing up. “If you keep pushing, Sterling will have you put away in a private facility where no one will ever find you. He has the power to do it, Claire.”

I took a step back, the weight of his words crashing down on me.

My own father had been blackmailed into helping them steal my life.

“Who else knows?” I asked.

“No one,” he said. “Only the inner circle.”

“What about Victoria?” I asked. “Does she know she is married to an impostor?”

My father hesitated, looking back at his desk.

“Victoria is a Sterling,” he said. “She does what her father tells her to do.”

“That’s not an answer,” I said.
