He tapped the top sheet of his paperwork.

“Under section four of the trust agreement, I am their designated legal guardian in the event of her death or incapacity.”

My tablet buzzed again in my palm.

I looked down at the screen.

The Cook County family court seal appeared in a bright blue notification box.

“We have an emergency temporary protection order, Voss,” I said, holding up the tablet.

“Judge Mercer signed it five minutes ago.”

Voss smiled, though the expression did not reach his pale eyes.

“An emergency petition based on abandonment,” Voss said.

“But they are not abandoned.”

He gestured to the town car behind him.

“I am here to claim them,” Voss said.

“My authority under the trust supersedes a temporary ex parte order.”

“The children were left in a terminal bathroom,” I said.

“That is child endangerment, Voss.”

“A temporary lapse by a third-party caregiver,” Voss replied smoothly.

“One I have already terminated.”

He stepped closer, reaching into his breast pocket.

He pulled out a certified copy of a probate court decree.

“Judge Vance signed these letters of guardianship three hours ago,” Voss said.
