“Is it done?” Tony’s voice continued.
Marcus stared at the scanner in Vincenzo’s hand, his face turning pale.
“Tony?” Marcus whispered.
The radio on Romano’s shoulder crackled in unison with the scanner.
“Romano, answer me,” Tony’s voice demanded.
Romano didn’t speak. He looked at me, then at the scanner.
“They know,” Romano finally muttered into his collar.
“Who knows?” Tony’s voice snapped.
“Vincenzo. The kid. And the girl,” Romano said.
“Then kill them all,” Tony said without a second of hesitation. “Do it now.”
Marcus flinched as if he had been struck.
“He lied to me,” Marcus whispered.
“He did,” Vincenzo said.
“I’m going to kill him,” Marcus growled, his gaze shifting from us to Romano.
“You won’t get the chance,” Romano said, raising his weapon to fire.
I braced myself to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, a high-pitched whine cut through the storm.
A bright light illuminated the entire pier from behind us.
It was a black SUV, its high beams blinding us.
The tires screeched on the wet gravel as it skidded to a halt.
The doors flew open.
More armed men stepped out, their faces covered.
