The task force would have to move in, and we didn’t have backup close enough.

“Marcus, don’t do this,” I said again.

“You’re a servant, Elena,” Marcus said, his eyes flashing with frustration. “You don’t know anything about this family.”

“I know more than you think,” I said.

I caught Romano’s eye.

He smiled, a cruel, knowing smirk that sent a chill down my spine.

He knew who I was, or at least he knew I was a threat to his plans.

“The boss wants this done,” Romano muttered, his hand now resting on his weapon.

“Which boss, Romano?” Vincenzo asked.

“The one who pays me,” Romano replied.

Marcus looked at Romano, a seed of doubt finally planting in his mind.

“Why did you bring me here, Romano?” Marcus asked.

“To get your revenge, kid,” Romano said. “Just like we agreed.”

“Then why are your men behind me?” Marcus asked.

He had finally noticed.

The two hooded men had shifted, their submachine guns now covering both Marcus and Vincenzo.

The trap was closing.

“Tony doesn’t like loose ends,” Vincenzo said.
