The Betrayal of the Syndicate and the Maid Who Saved Me
The primary office was a two-story pre-fabricated building near the water.
Light spilled from the upper windows, cutting through the darkness.
We could see two guards patrolling the perimeter, their raincoats shining under the floodlights.
“Miller’s men,” Victor whispered.
“We need to distract them,” I said.
I looked around and spotted a generator sitting near a stack of timber.
“Cut the main breaker to the yard lights,” I instructed.
Victor nodded and slipped away into the darkness.
I waited in the shadow of a blue container, my fingers freezing around the grip of my gun.
A few seconds later, the yard plunged into pitch blackness.
The floodlights died, and the loud hum of the generator sputtered to a halt.
“What the hell?” one of the guards shouted from the distance.
I heard their boots splashing through the puddles as they ran toward the generator shack.
I seized the moment and darted across the open asphalt to the office stairs.
I slipped through the side door, my back pressed against the interior wall.
The hallway inside was quiet, smelling of cheap coffee and damp carpets.
