“Then he is going to have a very difficult morning,” Vance said. “Without your digital signatures on the manifest, those crates are illegal contraband.”

“And the Maroni brothers know it,” I said.

“They knew the moment you walked out of the Costello estate,” Vance said. “Julian Maroni called me himself. He knew the police wouldn’t move unless you cleared the lane.”

“I didn’t clear it for him,” I said. “I simply stopped clearing it for Arthur.”

“To the rest of the city, that is the same thing,” Vance said.

I looked out the window, watching the tail lights of Gregory’s sedan disappear into the dark coastal fog.

“What will you do when the federal investigators ask about the harbor transfers?” I asked.

“I will tell them the truth,” Vance said. “I will tell them the paperwork was managed by Costello’s office. And since Costello’s office no longer has you to clean the server logs, the paper trail will lead straight to his desk.”

“Thank you, Commissioner,” I said.

“Do not thank me, Clara,” he said. “Julian Maroni is looking for you. He knows you have the key to everything Arthur owns.”
