Serena looked at Julian, then at the security officer standing a few yards away.
She let go of the bag.
“Take them,” she said, her voice dropping its sweet tone.
“They are useless to me anyway without the activation codes.”
She unzipped the leather backpack and pulled out a small velvet pouch containing two silver USB drives.
She tossed them onto the table.
Adrian reached for them, but I got there first.
My fingers closed around the cold metal of the tokens.
“Thank you,” I said.
Serena stood up, smoothing her coat.
“Enjoy the wreckage, Adrian,” she said, not looking at him.
“I hear London is lovely this time of year.”
She picked up her passport and walked toward the boarding gate, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.
Adrian didn’t follow her.
He sank into the chair she had just vacated, his face buried in his hands.
“She took everything,” he muttered.
“The cash reserves, the offshore accounts.”
“I have nothing.”
I looked down at him, feeling a strange absence of anger.
