“I make it my business to stay informed about major infrastructure in this city, Mr. Vance,” Adrian said, turning his gaze to Julian. “After all, Bennett Urban Systems has a deep interest in the stability of Chicago’s development.”

“Of course,” Julian said. “Though sometimes, interest can look a lot like interference.”

Serena laughed, a sharp, metallic sound that grated on my nerves.

“Oh, Julian,” Serena said, patting Adrian’s arm. “Adrian is only concerned about Claire’s reputation. It would be such a shame if her first independent project failed due to technical negligence.”

“My technical work has never been negligent, Serena,” I said, looking her directly in the eyes. “And it isn’t now.”

“We all make mistakes under pressure, Claire,” Adrian said, stepping closer. “Designing a cantilevered retaining wall requires a level of oversight that perhaps your small firm isn’t equipped to handle yet.”

“Is that what you think happened?” I asked. “A mistake under pressure?”

“The Chicago Department of Buildings doesn’t care about excuses,” Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, confidential tone. “They only care about what is in the system. And if the system says your design is unstable, the project is dead.”
