The screen lit up his face in the dim room.
He tapped the screen once, then held the phone to his ear.
“Mara,” Roman said into the phone.
“I have her.”
He paused, listening to the response.
“Get the car ready,” Roman said. “And call Dr. Patel.”
He hung up and slid the phone back into his pocket.
Then he turned his head slowly to look at my father.
“Arthur,” Roman said.
My father swallowed hard.
“We had an agreement, Roman,” Arthur said.
“We did,” Roman said.
“But you broke it when you entered my house.”
Roman signaled to his men.
“Take them downstairs,” Roman said.
“Both of them.”
Elias was pulled to his feet, his face pale and wet with sweat.
He didn’t say a word as they led him out.
Arthur looked at me one last time, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and fear.
“Lena,” he said.
“Don’t,” I said.
They dragged him out into the corridor, his shoes dragging against the linoleum.
The office was suddenly very quiet.
