Reclaiming My Home After My Family Declared Me Dead Overseas
“We found records of three personal loans Walter made to Vance over the last five years.”
“My father owned him,” Jake said, the realization hitting him.
“Yes,” Reyes said. “And Logan used that leverage to get the signature.”
The door handle jiggled, and we all froze.
Major Hayes walked in, her face tight and pale.
She held a rugged military tablet in her hand.
“We have a problem,” Hayes said, looking directly at Jake.
“Vance isn’t running,” Jake said. “Is he?”
“No,” Hayes said. “He just went on the offensive.”
She tapped the screen and slid the tablet across the table to Reyes.
“What is it?” I asked, gripping Owen tighter.
“He’s filed an emergency action,” Hayes said.
“He’s claiming Jake is an active deserter who stole classified intelligence before disappearing.”
Jake took a step toward the table. “That’s a lie.”
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a lie,” Hayes said.
“He’s using his authority as your superior officer.”
“What does that mean for us?” I asked.
“He’s initiated a lock on Jake’s military pay,” Hayes explained.
“And he’s officially requested a suspension of Jake’s security clearance.”
