Jake’s hands began to tremble against the table.

“He was my friend,” Jake said, his voice cracking.

“He was the one who told me my family would be taken care of if anything happened to me.”

“He took care of them, alright,” Reyes said.

“By giving Logan the keys to your life.”

Before Jake could respond, the red telephone on the wall began to ring.

The sound was sharp and loud in the quiet room.

Major Hayes stepped forward and picked up the receiver.

“Major Hayes,” she said, listening intently.

Her face went pale as she looked over at us.

“Put it through to the secure line,” Hayes said, hanging up the phone.

She turned to Jake, her eyes filled with sudden urgency.

“Jake, that was the gate,” she said.

“A vehicle just breezed through the security checkpoint without stopping.”

“It’s registered to Captain Vance.”

The lights in the hallway suddenly flickered and went black.

The emergency red backup lights hummed to life, casting long shadows across the floor.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the corridor outside.

Jake grabbed my arm, his grip tight and steady.
