I took the pen, my fingers cold, and signed my name next to his.

Marcus applied the heavy gold seal to the paper and signed his own name as the witness.

“It is done,” Marcus said, handing the original to me.

I held the paper, my thumb running over the raised gold seal.

“Thank you, Marcus,” Blake said. “Now, I need you to file this with the county clerk first thing in the morning.”

“I will do it personally,” Marcus said, bowing his head slightly before leaving the room.

Blake looked back at me, his shoulders dropping.

“That protects the boys from my mother,” he said. “They are yours, Emma.”

“They are ours,” I said, looking over at the sofa where the boys had fallen asleep.

“What do you mean?” Blake asked, a flicker of hope in his eyes.

“We will co-parent them,” I said. “Honestly. Gradually. No more secrets.”

“I would like that,” Blake said, his voice barely a whisper.

“But first,” I said, “we have to stop Helena.”

“How?” Blake asked.

“The USB drive,” I said, pointing to the black drive on his desk. “It has the laboratory results from the creek.”
