My husband had cleared out every dollar.

I pressed Naomi’s speed-dial number.

She answered on the second ring, her voice crisp and fully awake.

“Amelia,” Naomi said. “Are you and Lily safe?”

“We are in a motel,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “But Grant just emptied my personal account. The inheritance from my grandmother is gone.”

There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by the sound of shuffling paper.

“How much was in there?” she asked.

“Eighty-four thousand dollars,” I said. “It was my only safety net.”

“He’s panicking,” Naomi said. “That means he knows we are preparing to file. He’s trying to starve you out so you’ll come back.”

“What do I do?” I asked, looking over at Lily’s small, sleeping form.

“You sleep,” Naomi said. “I am drafting an emergency motion for temporary support and a freeze on his assets right now. By nine tomorrow morning, his banker will have a court order on his desk.”

“Can you really freeze his money?” I asked.

“Watch me,” Naomi replied. “Get some rest, Amelia. I will see you at my office at ten.”
