“I don’t want to be clear of it,” I said.

“I want to protect it.”

Celeste grabbed Graham’s arm, her fingernails digging into his sleeve.

“Graham, do something,” she whispered.

“We owe the bank two hundred thousand dollars by the end of the week.”

Graham didn’t answer her.

He kept his eyes on me, his teeth clenched so tight his jaw muscle jumped.

Alden Vale slowly began putting his files back into his leather case.

“I have already sent copies of these documents to the Commonwealth’s Attorney,” Alden said.

“They will be reviewing the power of attorney this afternoon.”

Graham spun around to face Alden.

“You filed a report against me?” Graham asked.

“I had to,” Alden said, his voice barely audible.

“Eleanor was my friend.”

“I should have never let you take those files in the first place.”

“You’re going down with me, Alden,” Graham said, stepping closer to the lawyer.

“You signed off on the initial title search.”

“I signed off on what you presented to me,” Alden said.
