“It is working,” I whispered.
The door handle rattled, and my heart jumped into my throat.
A knock followed, three rapid, heavy taps.
“Hospital security,” a deep voice called out from the hallway.
Sarah unlocked the door, letting in a tall guard in a grey uniform and Officer Harris, the patrolman who had taken my initial statement.
Harris looked at my phone first, taking it from my hand with a sterile plastic glove.
“We will trace the origin of the image,” Harris said, adjusting his duty belt.
“But right now, I have some news from the detective at your house.”
My breath caught. “Did they get into the system?”
“The neighbor, Arthur, gave our tech unit access to the external receiver on his garage,” Harris explained.
He pulled out a black tablet from his side pocket.
“The feed from your front porch and the hallway smart-hub was backed up on his local network.”
Harris tapped the screen of his tablet a few times.
“We just received the downloaded clip from the precinct.”
He turned the screen toward me.
The screen showed the familiar entryway of my home in Charlotte.
