But I couldn’t sleep.

The image of my empty house, the broken window, and Landon’s sister Vanessa approaching the front door kept playing in my mind.

Vanessa was just like her mother.

Cold, demanding, and fiercely protective of Landon.

If she arrived at the house and found the police, she would call Patricia immediately.

And the illusion of their perfect beach vacation would come crashing down.

Officer Miller walked back into the room, his face set in a hard line.

“The dispatch is on its way to your house now,” he said.

“They should be there in ten minutes.”

“I’m going to head over there myself to supervise the search.”

“We need to find that original phone of yours if they left it behind.”

“It was in the kitchen,” I said. “On the counter, before Patricia touched it.”

“But I think she took it with her.”

“We’ll find out,” Miller said.

He nodded to Sarah, then to me.

“Keep that phone on,” he said, pointing to the backup device.

“If he calls, do not answer.”

“Let it go to voicemail.”

“We need the recordings.”
