“Marissa, I need to check on another patient for just a moment,” Dr. Vance said.

“Nurse Davies is going to get you some clean scrubs and some water.”

“We want to make sure you are taken care of, too.”

She walked out of the room, her white coat billowing slightly behind her.

Nurse Davies stepped forward with a warm smile that did not reach her eyes.

“I’ll be right back with those clothes, Marissa,” she said.

“And some formula for when Rowan is ready, though that won’t be for a little while.”

She followed the doctor out, closing the glass door behind her.

Through the glass, I saw Dr. Vance stop at the central nursing station.

She picked up a black landline phone and began dialing.

She kept her back to our room, but her shoulders were tense.

Beside her, Nurse Davies was talking to a woman in a business suit who had just walked up.

The woman in the suit was holding a clipboard and looking directly at our door.

“Arthur,” I whispered.

“What is happening?”

Arthur stood by the window, his eyes fixed on the nursing station.
