I needed to get a sample of that blood draw before it was processed.

Or better yet, I needed to see the results before they reached Jared’s inbox.

I printed the forms and slipped them into my leather handbag.

I grabbed my coat.

I couldn’t stay in the office any longer.

The air was suffocating.

As I walked out of the executive suite, the receptionist smiled at me.

“Have a nice evening, Mrs. Harlan.”

“Thank you, Sarah,” I said, not slowing my pace.

I took the elevator down to the lobby and stepped out into the cool evening air.

The streetlights were just turning on, casting a yellow glow on the wet pavement.

I hailed a taxi.

“Kensington Private Hospital,” I told the driver.

The ride took twenty minutes through the heavy evening traffic.

I watched the city blur past the window, my mind racing.

I had to find a way to get into the lab.

If I could get the barcode number for Courtney’s sample, I could access the results online using the hospital’s portal.
