This was the proof of my poisoning, but I needed more to prove he was trying to declare me incompetent.

A loud thud from the front foyer interrupted my thoughts.

I deleted the email notification, shoved the phone back into my pocket, and walked out.

Two burly men in black polo shirts were carrying large, silver equipment cases up the stairs.

Behind them came Courtney’s assistant, loaded down with designer garment bags and suitcases.

Courtney stood at the base of the staircase, directing them with small, elegant waves of her hand.

“The blue velvet dresses go in the main closet,” she instructed.

“And make sure the prenatal vitamins are placed on the vanity.”

She looked up and saw me watching her from the hallway.

She smiled, a sweet, vacuous expression meant to disarm the security guards.

“Shelby, dear, I hope you don’t mind,” Courtney said.

“I had to bring my special air purifier. The pregnancy makes my allergies dreadful.”

“Bring whatever you need to feel comfortable,” I said, stepping closer.

Jared appeared beside her, his arm naturally finding its way to the small of her back.
