Brent let go and looked at his own lawyer.
“Can she do this?” Brent asked, his voice cracking.
The lawyer looked down at his tablet, squinting against the bright sun.
“The court order was finalized yesterday, Brent,” the lawyer said quietly.
“The Redwood Crest property belongs to the cash buyer now.”
“The wire transfer cleared ten minutes ago,” I said.
I pulled my phone out and showed him the screen.

The sale was complete, and the funds were sitting in my private account.
Brent stared at the screen, his jaw slack.
“Half of that is mine,” he whispered.
“Not according to the post-nuptial agreement you signed,” Jennifer said.
“You violated the terms when you attempted to encumber the property with unauthorized loans.”
“And when you locked me out of my own house,” I added.
Brent looked like he had been struck.
His phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket.
He pulled it out and looked at the screen.
“It’s Diane,” he muttered.
“Answer it,” I said.
“She’s standing on the sidewalk with her antique dressers.”
