The courier thanked her, turned on his heel, and walked down the steps toward a unmarked sedan.

Molly closed the door and slid the deadbolt back into place with a heavy click.

“What is it?” I asked, my heart thumping against my ribs.

Jennifer tore open the top of the envelope and pulled out a stack of documents on heavy bond paper.

She flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning the text behind her reading glasses.

“These are formal notices of lease termination and immediate eviction,” Jennifer said.

She held up a page bearing the logo of a luxury property management firm in downtown Denver.

“It looks like the management company isn’t waiting for a court date,” Jennifer added.

“Why would they send these to me?” I asked, looking down at Ivy, who was sleeping peacefully.

“Because Brent listed your Redwood Crest Drive estate as the primary guarantor for both properties,” Jennifer said.

She pointed to a line near the bottom of the second page.

“He used a forged power of attorney to sign your name as the guarantor for his mother’s penthouse,” she said.
