The recording ended with the sharp sound of a door deadbolt sliding into place, followed by the heavy stomping of Brent’s boots leaving the deck.
I pressed pause on the screen.
The foyer was completely silent again.
“He used the pre-approved equity line to guarantee their leases,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “He didn’t even have the money yet.”
“He used a forged authorization letter,” Jennifer said, her voice sharp and clinical. “He presented the estate’s financial statements as his own.”
She walked over to the window, looking out into the dark driveway.
“The moment the bank flags the account as frozen due to fraud, those corporate guarantees are worthless,” Jennifer said. “The landlords will receive a notification of immediate termination.”
“How long does that take?” I asked.
“Usually within forty-eight hours of the bank receiving our official affidavit,” Jennifer said. “Which I submitted at four o’clock this afternoon.”
I sat down on the bottom step of the grand staircase, my hands resting on my knees.
“So Diane and Karen are going to be evicted,” I said.
