“He parked at the curb and walked right up to my porch,” Molly said. “He looked completely manic, Tessa.”

The silence of the empty foyer seemed to press in on my ears.

“What did he want?” I asked.

“He wanted me to convince you that Jennifer is scamming you,” Molly said. “He was shaking.”

I heard a rustle on her end of the line, followed by the soft sound of a laptop opening.

“I didn’t open the door,” Molly continued. “I spoke to him through the Ring camera, and I set my phone to record the audio of the call he made to me while he was standing out there.”

“You recorded him?” I asked.

“Every single word,” Molly said. “I’m emailing the audio file to you and Jennifer right now.”

I heard the chime of an incoming email on my phone.

“Listen to it,” Molly said. “You need to hear what he’s planning.”

“Stay inside, Molly,” I said. “Keep the doors locked.”

“I already did,” she said. “Call me back when you’ve heard it.”

I hung up and tapped the email from Molly.
