“Exactly,” Jennifer said. “When he finds out the loan is denied and the title is locked, he will realize the house is being sold out from under him.”

“We need to finish this,” I said. “We need to close the sale with Elliot’s buyer.”

“I’ve already contacted Elliot,” Jennifer said. “His buyer is ready to sign the final paperwork right now.”

“What about the deed transfer?” I asked.

“We can do it digitally,” Jennifer said. “But once it’s done, the buyer owns the house. Everything inside it becomes their legal responsibility, or they can dispose of it.”

“Good,” I said. “Let them.”

“Elliot told me his buyer doesn’t want the furniture,” Jennifer added. “They are bringing in a demolition and remodel crew. They want to gut the entire interior.”

I pictured the custom Italian marble countertops Brent had insisted on.

I pictured the high-end home theater system he spent weekends configuring.

It was all going to be ripped out.

“When can they start?” I asked.

“The moment the deed is recorded,” Jennifer said. “They have a crew on standby in Boulder. They can be at the house with dumpster bins by tomorrow morning.”
