The sender was Jennifer.

The subject line read: *Urgent: Loan Application PDF.*

I tapped the PDF icon with a thumb that would not stop shaking.

The document downloaded slowly, a thin blue progress bar creeping across the top of my screen.

Molly leaned over my shoulder, her breath warm against my cheek.

“What is it?” she whispered.

The file opened, displaying a multi-page loan application from a private mortgage firm in Denver.

The loan amount was one point five million dollars.

I scrolled to the signature page.

There was my name, written in a cursive script that looked almost like mine, but the slant was slightly too vertical.

Next to it was a fresh blue notary stamp, still wet at the edges when the document had been scanned.

The notary public name on the stamp was Sarah Jenkins.

My phone began to vibrate in my palm, the incoming call screen blocking the document.

It was Jennifer.

I swiped to answer and put it on speaker.

“Jennifer, I’m looking at it,” I said.

“He tried to pull out a home equity line of credit,” Jennifer said, her voice sharp and steady. “A massive one.”
