My phone rang on the counter.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I hesitated, then answered it.

“Sophia?” a voice said.

It was Ethan.

His voice sounded raspy and exhausted.

“They let you have a phone call?” I asked, my voice flat.

“Sophia, please,” he said. “You have to help me.”

“I don’t have to do anything for you, Ethan,” I said.

“The bail is set at fifty thousand dollars,” he said. “I don’t have it. My mother doesn’t have it.”

“Use the Cayman account,” I said coldly.

There was a long silence on the line.

“You blocked the transfer,” he whispered.

“I did,” I said.

“Sophia, I am your husband,” he said, his voice rising in panic. “You can’t leave me in here.”

“I signed the divorce papers this morning,” I said. “You should be receiving them soon.”

“No,” he gasped. “No, please. We can talk about this. We can work it out.”

“There is nothing to work out,” I said. “You tried to ruin me.”

“It was Ryan’s fault!” he yelled. “He forced my hand! They were going to kill him, Sophia!”
