“Mrs. Vance,” Agent Vance said, turning her gaze to Linda.

“We have a warrant to seize all financial records and digital devices belonging to your sons.”

“We also have a warrant for your financial records.”

Linda’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“My records?” she finally whispered.

“Why my records?”

“We are currently reviewing the documentation filed for the bridge loan on your properties,” Agent Vance said.

“The lender you utilized is under federal indictment for operating a shadow lending scheme.”

“The documents you signed to secure that loan are under audit.”

Linda looked at Ethan, her eyes wild with a sudden, terrible realization.

“Ethan,” she said, her voice cracking.

“You told me that lender was safe.”

“You told me it was just a private investor.”

Ethan did not answer.

He looked down at the dining table, his chest heaving under his sweater.

“He lied to you, Linda,” I said.

“Just like he lied to me.”

“He needed your house to secure the cash because Ryan was going to be hurt by his creditors.”

“He knew the risk.”
