“And you used the equity from Linda’s townhouse to back it up, didn’t you, Linda?”

Linda sat up straighter, her chin tilting upward.

“I did what was necessary to protect my family,” she said.

“Unlike you, who would rather let us starve while you sit on a pile of money you did not earn.”

“The townhouse is secure,” she added.

“The loan documents are perfectly legal.”

“They aren’t,” I said.

“And neither is the business Ryan has been running.”

Ryan flinched.

He looked toward the hallway, his breathing suddenly shallow.

“What are you talking about?” Ryan asked, his voice cracking.

“You don’t know anything.”

“I know about the Costa Rican betting accounts,” I said.

“I know about the dummy corporations you set up in Delaware.”

“And I know Ethan has been signing his name to the wire transfers.”

Ethan stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor.

“This is ridiculous,” Ethan said.

“You are making up stories because you don’t want to help us.”

“Give me the folder, Sophia.”

He reached for the blue folder.

I did not move to stop him.
