I walked back into the kitchen, picked up the manila envelope, and tossed it onto the counter between us.

“With what collateral?” I asked. “Are you going to use your half of the debt as leverage?”

He stared at the envelope, his mouth slightly open.

He didn’t touch it.

“Where did you get that?” he whispered.

“You co-signed his gambling debts,” I said, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

“Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars to an offshore trust.”

“Sophia, please,” he said, stepping closer. “You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain it to me,” I said. “Explain why my husband is legally responsible for a half-million-dollar illegal debt.”

He rubbed his face with both hands, looking suddenly much older than his thirty-four years.

“Ryan got in too deep with some very bad people,” he said, his voice cracking. “They threatened him. They threatened Mom.”

“So you put your name on the line?” I asked. “You put our entire future on the line for him?”

“They were going to hurt him, Sophia! I didn’t have a choice.”
