How My Family Tried to Destroy Me and Ended Up Ruining Themselves
We got into Wyatt’s car, and he immediately turned on the heater.
I leaned my head back against the leather seat, closing my eyes.
“Are you okay?” Wyatt asked, reaching over to take my hand.
“I am,” I said, though my hands were still shaking slightly. “It’s finally happening.”
“They have no cards left to play, Sadie,” Wyatt said gently. “The audit is ironclad.”
I looked out the passenger window, staring at the glowing windows of the family home.
Inside, I could see the shadows of my parents moving quickly through the living room.
They were arguing, their silhouettes tense and angry against the drawn curtains.
Down the street, parked under the shadow of a large oak tree, the headlights of a dark SUV flickered once.
It was Detective Harper’s unmarked vehicle.
Harper had promised me they would keep a close eye on the house tonight, knowing how desperate my father could get.
“Let’s go home,” I told Wyatt.
He put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb.
But as we drove down the street, I couldn’t shake the look on my father’s face right before we left.
