How My Family Tried to Destroy Me and Ended Up Ruining Themselves
“Now please, Wyatt, hide me!”
“They’re going to break the door down!”
Detective Harper didn’t wait another second.
He turned the handle and shoved the heavy wooden door open, the latch giving way with a loud crack.
The door hit the interior wall, throwing a bright shaft of light into the dim office.
“Police!” Harper announced, stepping into the room.
“Nobody move.”
Two uniformed officers immediately followed him, their heavy boots thudding against the linoleum floor.
Melanie shrieked, dropping her designer purse.
A silver lipstick case and loose coins spilled out, rolling across the floor until they hit Wyatt’s leather shoes.
Wyatt stepped back, his face completely blank as he reached into his breast pocket and retrieved his phone.
He tapped the screen to stop the recording and handed the device to Detective Harper.
“I believe you’ll find everything you need right there,” Wyatt said.
He walked past the officers without giving Melanie another glance.
His eyes locked onto mine as I stood in the doorway, and he reached out, drawing me into a tight embrace.
I leaned against him, feeling the steady beat of his heart through his coat.
