“What rest of it?” she asked.
“The attack on Sadie,” Wyatt said, his eyes locking onto hers.
“The night she was hurt at the warehouse.”
“I need to know who was involved, Melanie.”
“Because if the police link you to that assault, my fifty percent won’t mean a thing when you’re in a cell.”
Melanie glanced toward the door as heavy footsteps began to echo in the hallway outside.
“Nobody can prove anything about that night,” Melanie muttered, her voice shaking slightly.
“That’s not good enough,” Wyatt said, stepping closer to her.
“I need details.”
“If I’m going to be your partner, I need the truth.”
The footsteps stopped right outside the office door.
A heavy knock rattled the frosted glass.
“Police!” a voice called out. “Open the door!”
Melanie looked at the door, then back at Wyatt, her eyes wide with a mixture of panic and greed.
She opened her mouth to speak, her fingers clutching her purse so tightly her knuckles turned white.
“I can get you out of this,” Wyatt said, his voice dropping to a smooth, convincing murmur.
