“Exactly,” Arthur said. “That is why your mother cornered me in the basement.”

“She knew I was going to retrieve the box for you.”

My stomach turned at the thought of my mother’s desperation.

She had been willing to let an old man die in a sealed basement just to keep a fortune that was never hers.

“We need to get that box,” Harper said, pocketing her notebook.

“My officers are already stationed at the house, but we need a search warrant for the interior.”

“I can get the judge to sign off on it within the hour.”

Suddenly, Wyatt’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out, his brow furrowing as he read the screen.

“It’s an alert from the office security system,” Wyatt said, his voice tightening.

“Someone is logged into the main server using my administrative credentials.”

I sat up, ignoring the sharp pain in my ribs.

“But you’re here with me,” I said. “How can anyone be using your login?”

“My laptop,” Wyatt said, his face turning pale. “It was in the study at your parents’ house.”
