How My Family Stole My Future and Exposed Their Own Darkest Secrets
It was a dark blue corporate folder.
I picked it up.
Inside were financial ledgers from Brandon’s failed company, Croft & Parker Solutions.
“Arthur,” I said. “This isn’t mine.”
He took the folder from my hand.
He flipped through the pages, his eyes widening slightly.
“These are internal accounts,” Arthur said. “The ones that show the double-ledger system Brandon used.”
“How did this get here?” I asked.
“The person who broke in must have left it,” Arthur said.
“Or they wanted me to find it,” I said.
My phone buzzed in my pocket again.
The screen lit up with another message from the unknown number.
My fingers hovered over the screen as I unlocked it.
The text read: *The police won’t help you, Ava. But I can.*
I stared at the words.
“They are watching us,” I whispered, looking toward the window.
The rain was streaking down the glass, blurring the campus lights outside.
“Who is ‘I’?” Arthur asked, looking over my shoulder.
Before I could answer, my phone began to ring.
The caller ID still showed “Unknown.”
I pressed the speaker button.
