“Do you recognize the name Cole Brantley?”

Evan swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple moving convulsively.

“He is… a business acquaintance, Your Honor,” Evan said, his voice barely audible.

“He is a licensed wine merchant who is currently under federal investigation for receiving stolen goods,” Judge Vance said.

“According to these bank records, Mr. Brantley wired seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars to this Zurich account yesterday morning.”

“The source of those funds is listed as the liquidation of private cellar assets from the Hayes estate.”

Vivian let out a low, shaky breath.

“Your Honor,” Henderson began, but the judge raised a single, stern finger.

“I have heard enough,” Judge Vance said.

He picked up his gavel.

“The court finds clear and convincing evidence of systemic fraud, misrepresentation, and active theft designed to deplete the marital estate.”

“The prenuptial agreement signed by Claire Hayes and Evan Hayes is hereby declared null and void.”

The sound of the gavel striking the wooden block felt like a physical shock.

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, feeling the weight of the last three years lift from my shoulders.
