“She says you’re bitter,” Nathan said, watching my face for a reaction. “She says you’ve spent years watching her get everything she wanted while you stayed single and stuck in a mid-level office.”

“Caroline’s opinions are her own,” I said.

“She’s worried about you, Evelyn,” he said, though his voice lacked any real warmth. “But she’s also smart. She’s been asking questions about why you’re suddenly so interested in my career.”

My eyes narrowed slightly. “What questions?”

“She knows you’ve been digging,” Nathan said. “She saw the log on my computer. She knows someone from the district office was pulling my personnel files.”

“That was an official inquiry,” I said.

“To her, it looks like a personal vendetta,” Nathan said. “She thinks you are trying to ruin her happiness because you don’t have any of your own.”

I kept my voice flat. “The evidence in that folder has nothing to do with personal feelings.”

“It won’t look that way to your father,” Nathan said, stepping closer. “If you push this, Caroline will go to him. She will tell him you are using your position to harass me.”
