“Where to, sir?” Marcus asked from the driver’s seat.
Nathan didn’t answer immediately. He looked back at me, his eyes searching my face in the dim light.
“Home,” Nathan said.
But as the SUV turned onto the highway, the screen of the dashboard console suddenly flashed with an incoming call.
It was an unlisted number, the caller ID blank.
Nathan stared at the blinking icon, his hand hovering over the answer button.
Nathan tapped the screen.
The car speakers crackled with static before a familiar, strained voice filled the cabin.
“Nathan,” Grant said, his voice shaking.
Nathan’s grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles turned white.
“This is a recorded line, Grant,” Nathan said, his voice flat.
“She lied,” Grant hissed. “You both lied to the judge. I will find the proof.”
“The court has made its ruling,” Nathan replied, looking at the road ahead. “If you contact Emily or Rosie again, my lawyers will file harassment charges within the hour.”
“You think you’ve won because of some fake paper?” Grant spat.
“I know we won because Rosie is safe,” Nathan said.
