How a Nine Minute Lie Exposed a Wealthy Family and Saved a Child
“The judge will have seen this by the time we walk into the courtroom,” I said.
“Grant’s lawyers will use it to paint me as a liar who sold her daughter’s safety for a paycheck.”
“My lawyers are already on their way,” Nathan said, reaching for his phone again.
He tapped the screen rapidly, sending a text.
“They will handle the press leak.”
“But we have to face the court ourselves.”
He opened his car door, and the damp, chilly air of the garage rushed in.
It carried the smell of car grease and wet concrete.
I unbuckled Rosie and lifted her out of her seat.
Her yellow raincoat crinkled in my arms.
“Hold onto me tight, okay?” I whispered into her neck.
She nodded, wrapping her small arms around my collarbone.
Nathan walked around the front of the SUV and stood beside me.
He looked at the dark blue dress I wore.
“You look fine, Emily,” he said.
“Don’t let them see you hesitate.”
He offered his arm.
I took it, my hand resting on the expensive wool of his grey coat.
