“The doctor signed off,” Lena said, offering a small, reassuring smile. “Your vitals are stable, and the baby is doing great.”

“I need to get out of here,” I said, looking at the window.

“The locks on your house are being changed right now,” Claire said, tapping her phone. “I called my contact at the housing office. They sent a maintenance crew over.”

“What about Ocala?” I asked.

“I ran the address of the assisted living facility your mother mentioned,” Claire said, lowering her voice. “It’s called Whispering Pines Haven. It’s about a three-hour drive south.”

“We need local law enforcement involved,” I said. “If I just show up and demand to see Margaret Elaine Mitchell, they’ll turn me away.”

“I already called the Marion County Sheriff’s Department,” Claire said.

She pulled a business card from her pocket.

“Detective Vance,” she said. “He’s a former military investigator. I worked a procurement fraud case with him five years ago.”

“Does he believe us?” I asked.

“He’s skeptical, but he knows my reputation,” Claire said. “He agreed to meet us near the facility.”
