I had never seen this document in my life.

I scrolled down to the second attachment.

It was a bank routing change request for the State of Florida Division of Retirement.

It authorized the direct deposit of Margaret Elaine Mitchell’s monthly state pension into a regional bank account in Ocala.

The account holder listed on the joint account was Richard Mitchell.

“Ma’am?” Sergeant Miller asked, his voice low. “What does it say?”

I looked up from the screen, my hands cold.

“My grandmother, Margaret, isn’t dead,” I said.

Miller frowned, his brow furrowing under his service cap.

“Your father said she passed away years ago,” he said.

“He lied,” I said. “She is at a private care facility in Ocala called Greenaway Manor.”

I tapped the screen, opening the third text message from Claire.

My thumb hovered over the glowing glass as I read her typed words.

*Rachel, they used your forged signature to file a dependency complaint with Ethan’s command,* Claire had written.

*They claimed you were mentally unstable and unable to care for the baby.*
