“We can restrict your visitor access immediately,” she said.

“I will have security put you on a confidential status.”

“That means if anyone calls or comes to the desk asking for Rachel Carter, we tell them we have no patient by that name.”

“Yes,” I said. “Please do that.”

Lena walked over to the wall phone next to the hand sanitizer dispenser.

She dialed a three-digit extension.

“This is Nurse Lena on the maternity ward,” she said into the receiver.

“I need to change a patient’s status to private.”

“Carter, Rachel.”

“Yes, immediate effect.”

“Also, please dispatch a security officer to our floor desk for a brief consult.”

She hung up the receiver and looked back at me.

“Security will keep an eye on the hallway monitors,” Lena said.

“Nobody gets past the double doors without checking in with the nurse’s station first.”

“Thank you,” I said.

My hand was still trembling as I gripped my phone.

The image of Victoria’s smile before she blocked the camera was burned into my mind.

She had used a brass key that looked exactly like my spare.
