My phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw a text message from Mia.

*Are you okay, Mom?* it read.

I smiled, my fingers trembling slightly as I typed my reply.

*I’m fine, sweetie,* I wrote. *It’s over. I’m coming home.*

I put the phone away and picked up my leather folder from the table.

I walked out of the lounge, leaving the empty teacup and the spilled cash on the floor.

The storm was still raging outside, but as I stepped into the rain, I felt only peace.

The legacy was safe.

My daughter was safe.

And for the first time in a very long time, I was free.
