“You’re lying,” she said.
“You signed the secondary authorization forms yesterday morning, Samantha,” I said, my voice cold. “Your name is on every single document.”
She did not answer.
She turned, threw the door open, and ran out into the corridor, her heels clicking frantically against the hardwood.
Nobody in the boardroom moved to follow her.
“What about Preston?” Arthur asked, looking up from his computer.
“He is currently at JFK Airport,” I said. “Waiting for a flight to Zurich.”
“Will he get away?” Marcus asked, leaning forward.
“Not if the authorities do their job,” I said.
I checked my phone.
The digital clock changed to 2:25 PM.
My fingers were cold, but my heart was beating with a steady, rhythmic purpose.
I stood up from the table and gathered my papers back into the folder.
“Thank you, gentlemen,” I said to the board. “I will keep you updated on the transition.”
“Your father would be proud of you, Claire,” Arthur said softy.
I nodded, unable to speak for a moment, and walked out of the room.
